Difference between Wi-Fi and Li-Fi (Explained)

Contents

Well, it is an undeniable fact that we are surrounded by the internet from all the four sides, and it is nearly impossible to get out of this enclosure.  The network technology comes in two shades: Wi-Fi and Li-Fi. Wi-Fi is a wireless local area network that enables the device to access internet services, whereas Li-Fi is light-based communication technology. It is meant to give lightning-fast speed to the system. This article is all about sharing the difference between Wi-Fi and Li-Fi.

What is Wi-Fi technology?

It is a wireless form of network technology that allows a device to access and run internet services. With this, you can connect various deviceslike smartphones, laptops, computers, tablets, smart TV, and other gadgets that require internet and has Wi-Fi features in it.

The full form of Wi-Fi is wireless Fidelity, and it uses radio waves that are transmitted and received through the Wi-Fi router. It is based on the WLAN 802.11a/b/n/ad standard technology. You can enjoy the operational frequency of 2.4GHz and 5GHz. With dual-band devices like SuperBoost Wi-Fi, you can enjoy double connectivity strength. The 2.4 GHz frequency makes sure that you get an extended range over a large area. So, this distributes network at every corner of the house. The 5 GHz frequency band enables you to enjoy high-speed internet.

Usually, Wi-Fi has better network coverage range as compared to Li-Fi. Wi-Fi can cover network distance up to 32 metres. But due to hindrance it cannot pass through water bodies and works inefficiently in less dense regions. Still,it is an integral part of online networking and communication. You can even watch streaming videos and play online games without any lag withSuperBoostWi-Fi, which is one of the best and most promising Wi-Fi routers.

Advantages of Wi-Fi

  • Wi-Fi has more significant and more efficient network coverage range.
  • Highly secured means of internet connectivity.

Disadvantages of Wi-Fi

  • Due to interference, it cannot work undersea.

What is Li-Fi technology?

Li-Fi is short for Light Fidelity that operates with Visible Light Communication technology or VLC technology. In this solid light emitting appliances like LED bulbs are used for the transmission to give wireless network. The area coverage of this quite less as it works in the confined area near the source.  It works by modulating the frequencies between the sender and the receiver. The lights are engineered to manipulate the range of signals.

The utmost advantage of using a Li-Fi connection is that it works over the salty water bodies also. That is why they are widely used in airlines and for undersea explorations and navigations. Its range is restricted to 10 metres only due to light technology.

Advantages of Li-Fi

  • It can be used for airlines and undersea navigation because its network can pass through the salty water.
  • Incurs low energy consumption cost.

Disadvantages of Li-Fi

  • The light source has to be turned on always.
  • Its network coverage range is limited to 10 metres only.
  • You have to install multiple Li-Fi systems if you want to operate it over a large area.
