The internet provides various methods to make notes like the three-column method or the Cornell method. But always remember that the most convenient style is one’s own style.

The three-column method is quite simple. It is one of the commonly used methods, especially for mathematics. Divide the page into three columns and these three columns are used to segregate the different kinds of related data. At the top of each page write the title clearly and maybe the points that are being discussed on the particular page.

The first column can be used to write the main points/keywords which will be dealt with in the other two columns and important formulae can also be written. This will help in easier navigation through the chapter. The middle column can be used to make important pointers/explanations relating to the keyword or can have steps on how the problems should be solved. The last column may be used to write how to solve the problems or a few examples can be worked out. The first column will provide all the important details and the other two columns can be read for more clarity on the pointers in the first column. This is the easiest, clearest, and simplest way to make notes, especially for mathematics.

The Cornell method is another famous method which many people use. In this method, the page is divided into four sections – two vertical sections and two horizontal sections. There is a horizontal division towards the top of the page and similarly a row towards the bottom of the page. The row at the bottom should be a bit bigger than the row on top. Towards the left side make a small column connecting both the horizontal lines
The row on the top can be used to add the title or the topics which will be added to the page. The last row at the bottom of the page should be used to add the summary of all that is discussed on that particular page which is why it should be bigger. The summary is a huge help to revise or remember the major points of a particular topic or even a particular page. The small column on the left is for the major points/concepts/formulae. The other column can be used to elaborate on the points or to work out problems based on those points.

It is up to the student to decide how the notes are made. Everyone will have their unique style of writing and organizing and the same goes with making notes. The student can improvise and make notes as preferable to them. The above two methods can be used as such or can be used as guidelines that can be improvised and used according to the likes of the student; even a combination of these methods can be used to make it more effective.

Other tips can be incorporated to make the notes more efficient.

Keywords are the most important. Never miss out on any key points or any formulae. Note them in a manner that they are easily visible and clear. This will help in a quick revision. And also to find relevant information on a particular topic easily.

Make sure to ask doubts whenever they arise and make a note of the answers. If the doubts arise during self-preparation, then note them down and ensure that the doubts are cleared as soon as possible.

Picking out the most important point is a very essential step. This needs a lot of attention in class and later while preparing. If proper attention isn’t paid there is a chance that some major points will be missed out. And make sure to write only the most important points in the first column – this not only helps in navigation through the topics but will also help a lot during last-minute preparation.

Going through the notes after class or after completing the topic will help in making sure that no point is missed out.

Depending on the convenience of the student the notes can be written or digital. The notes can be made virtually in the beginning or can be shifted to a virtual medium later. This can help in organizing data better. Depending on the convenience of the student the notes can be written or digital.

Use different colors to denote different things. Colour coding will also unknowingly create an interest to study. The most important topics can be marked in a particular color. The areas in which the student is weak can be denoted in another color and so on. Different colored pens or pencils can be used or different markers can be used to highlight. Also, make note of the topics with the most weightage of marks.

It is not necessary that the notes are made only in English. The aim is to understand/remember what was studied. Always be free to use other languages or diagrams or whatever makes it more convenient and easier to comprehend.
